BT Series DRO
Shooting Star Technology has been providing electronics and mechanical services to the aerospace, medical, and computer research fields since 1989.

We have our own manufacturing facility as well as a fully equipped electronics lab and offer a 5-year warranty.

Our customer list includes Boeing, NASA, M.I.T., and the Mayo Clinic.

The BT-2 is a 2-axis unit (X and Y)

The BT-3 is a 3-axis unit  (X,Y and Z).

The system includes scales with all mounting hardware, all cables and the digital display unit.

Both BT-2 and BT-3 work by counting the revolutions of a precision pinion on a rack with an optical encoder.

This allows the scales to be shortened by the end user with a hacksaw since it is just a matter of cutting the metal rack. The scale is nominally 0.75 inch in diameter over the cover and the readout head is 1.85 x 1.6 x 2.6 inches.

Scales

  • Lengths: 16 and 48 inches (can easily be shortened by user)
  • Resolution: 0.0005 inch
  • Technology: precision rack and anti-backlash pinion, with optical encoder on pinion.
  • Electrical: quadrature signals, TTL levels, 2000 counts/inch

Display Units

  • Keypad: splash-proof membrane tactile keys
  • Features:
    • Bolt Circles
    • Bolt lines
    • Presets
    • Tool Offsets
    • Power fail memory
    • inch/mm
    • diameter mode
    • INC/ABS
    • reversible count direction
  • Display: 7 segment LED, 0.57 inch high digits
  • Range: Readout to ± 99.9995 inch (± 1600.00 mm)
  • Case: Rugged Steel, 8x3.75x1.5 inch
  • Power: 110 volt operation

Here are the answers to the questions we are most frequently asked about CBX. If the answer you seek isn't here, just e-mail us and we will provide the information you want.
How does the CBX work?
The CBX works by counting the revolutions of a precision pinion on a rack with an optical encoder.

A rack and pinion? How much backlash is there?
There is NO backlash with the CBX! The gear is mounted on a small leaf spring, and it is constantly in mesh with the rack.

Is there any wear in the rack/encoder?
The spring that presses the gear into the teeth of the rack is applying a very slight pressure, not enough to amount to any wear.

Will it fit my machine?
Chances are that it will. Shooting Star Technology has never found a mill or lathe that the CBX won't fit on. (We also offer a 30 day money back guarantee, so there would be no problem to return if it didn't fit)

Can I cut the scales to make them fit my machine?
Yes. The rack can easily be cut with a hacksaw to fit your machine.

How do I protect the scale from chips and coolant?
The CBX comes with 1/2" wire loom (black, plastic tubing) over the racks. We also suggest you shield it with angle aluminum, or iron, etc. This will protect the scale from any damage from dropping something heavy on it.

Who makes your precision racks and pinions?
We do. Shooting Star Technology uses a custom built CNC machine to cut the racks. The pinions are cut on a #3 Fellows fine pitch gear shaper.

What is the accuracy of the CBX?
The accuracy of the CBX is 0.002 / foot. (Worst case scenario)

What is the resolution of the CBX?
The resolution of the CBX is 0.0005. (1/2 thou)

What is the repeatability?
The repeatability of the CBX is 0.0005. (1/2 thou)

I'm just a beginner machinist, what if I need help installing CBX?
The CBX Digital Display unit includes a manual with mounting considerations, and diagrams. It also shows you step by step how to use all of the features of the unit. However, if you are unsure of mounting, or have any other questions, Sartell offers installation for an additional cost.

What if I damage my CBX?
Shooting Star Technology keeps a stock of all parts of the CBX, and we will courier out a replacement for your damaged part usually the same day! There is no waiting for a lengthy factory evaluation, we realize that once you get used to your CBX, you don't want to be without it!

What kind of warranty does the CBX have?
The CBX has a 5 year warranty, and a 60 day money back guarantee.

What else does Shooting Star Technology do?
In addition to the CBX Digital Display, Shooting Star Technology provides custom measuring solutions for aerospace, medical, and computer graphics industries. Since the CBX Digital Readout came alive in 1996, it has been our main focus
